Most of you probably wont know me. I used to be very active on here, but haven’t engaged with this much for the past 5 years or so.

Hopped on because I had some fun ideas and found the website has completely changed. I know that new ownership took over while i was still around, so not a huge surprise….However

Navigating the site, and even my own account has become much harder. Even the search bar is hard to find. I had to search my own profile up, because you can’t find it via the dashboard, it just takes you into the creator side of it.

While there are now numerous new frames and ways to edit the cards, it doesn’t appear that standard frames (especially standard multicolor frames) are available. Or perhaps i just can’t find them.

I couldn’t even figure out how to get onto the forums via the website, and separately googled it.

While I appreciate the obvious effort that has gone into making the site have more options, and likely to make it more profitable, i have to say that as an old user, its honestly a regression in usability.

Anyone else, especially those who’ve been around since I was have any thoughts on this, or tips on how to use it?

I cant see a category where you discuss site problems so i will just talk about it here. Is it slow for anybody else? it takes way longer to load then most other sites, and even when you successfully log in it says that your credentials were wrong? That doesn't stop you from logging in or anything its just confusing. The set feature seems to have been ignored, you cant set thumbnails for them and they no longer count commons, color etc. i also find it a little scummy to require premium to recover an unsaved card, I'm fine with the other monetization but that one seems wrong to me. Also the top cards only having like 1 upvote? there needs to be some incentive to vote on peoples cards, or maybe there just arent many people using this site...

Sorry if this post is annoying I just had to get it off my chest.

Hey everyone. Ranshi here.

I know the forums have been dying, and unsupported, and the site main has been rapidly shifted towards a proxy maker. I have no intention of taking back my stated plans to document my years of work, a decade as of last December, and leave this desecrated home of mine.

That said, I still would yearn for the community, to discuss ideas and better ourselves together in this creative space. I had considered moving to Reddit for my main mode of sharing and discussing custom cards, but Reddit can be quite toxic, and many people will have their mistakes jeered about on other communities.

The result I landed on is to make a tumblr blog for it. I intend to be posting new designs of mine there, as well as breakdowns of what the design process looks like from me in a case by case. Additionally, I will be republishing my many works documented from here, with original and updated wording and balance, to discuss my old design philosophies and how its metamorphosed over the years.

Moving Away From Cardsmith (For The Time Being)

Hi, I'm making this post to announce my departure from Cardsmith. Until these issues are solved I will not be uploading any new cards to the website. I will still remain on the forums and the discord server. I will be posting cards exclusively on MTGCardBuilder under the user ThatKeefGuy if you wish to see my work going forward. It's so sad to see this website fall apart at what looks like corporate greed. I've been teetering on leaving for the better part of a year now. These changes that were meant to improve the website has only worsened it, and the community was the only thing holding me from pulling the trigger. I will still remain in the community at large, just not on the website itself. Feel free to reach out, my forum and discord DMs are always open to anyone! This doesn't have to be forever, but if the state of the website isn't restored to something great, I most likely wont return. See you on the other side Smithers.

Keef's Review Of The New Website. What Were They Thinking?

Hey, Its Keef, you may know me on MTGCardsmith as TheKeefMan, or possibly ThatKeefGuy. I've been a predominant member of the community for the better part of 2 years and am hoping of continuing it. This is my review of the new webite layout in its (near) entirety. (I will not be exploring the Proxy printing services and its changes in this review.) Most, if not all of this review is subjective, and is based off my personal experience using the website. You may have had differing experiences than I have, so keep that in mind.

If there was one word to describe these changes, it would be 'Frustrating'. Firstly, lets go over the home page, the front of the website, and it's many flaws. To begin, it is slow as balls. The old interface wasnt exactly speedy to begin with, but using the new layout feels like the webite's packets are being drug through molasses on the way to my browser. I use Cardsmith primarily on a PC, a decent one at that. Running off half-gig fiberoptic view ethernet. I probably have the most ideal machine to run this website, and its awful. It's entirely a server-side slowness.

The layout of the homepage is more or less the same as before. Just with a new coat of paint. It looks good in my honest opinion. Although, when you go to preview a card from the homepage, things start to fall apart. When you click on a card, it no longer redirects you to the cards real page. It instead gives you an embed popup. This makes it harder to share cards, This could easily be fixed if there was a 'Share' button anywhere in this popup, but there isn't. Another issue I have with this embed, there's no easy way to see who made the card or be directed to their profile from this embed. The only way to see the cardsmith from this popup is tucked away at the bottom of it, in the "Love this card?" Section.

I've marked where the cardsmith is, but I've also highlighted deadspace where the author could be put. You can also see who made it on the pagefront where you first saw it. But this doesn't excuse the popup's lack of one.

Now I do want to talk about the issues I had with, and still have logging into the site. I have used the new update on three different browsers; My main browser, Firefox, Microsoft edge and Brave Browser. The latter two being Chromium based. I used to be unable to login on Firefox, but I could sign in if I fiddled with the other two long enough, though it was very inconsistent. It's better now and am able to login on Firefox, but sometimes it will still have issues and will need to fuss about with it.

I will brush over the new 'Contests' tab shortly. There are two contests that will happen at a given time. A weekly contest, that changes weekly, and a monthly. All self explanatory. From what I've seen the weekly and monthly contests are usually the same format, requiring you to give new art to a preexisting magic card, but the monthly having a bigger reward for the winners. The winnings you can earn are cash coupons for aforementioned proxy printing service. The weekly contests awards a 15$, 8$ and 5$ coupon depends on your placement and the monthly awarding 50$, 20$ and 10$ respectively.

Now I'd like to talk about the new 'Browse' section of the website. I'd love this section if it actually worked. But with the speed of the website, you don't so much as "browse" as you do wait. It's fine for what it is and I'll touch on it more as we get into the card editor, because they play hand in hand as you'll see.

We've finally gotten to what most of you probably actually care about, the new editor, and yes I have opinions.

Surprisingly, I've actually used this editor before, and I've got a low of experience with it. It's literally just a copy of MTGCardBuilder's editor, but instead of being very intuitive and straightforward, it is stripped off all polish and usability. If MTGCardBuilder was Windows 11. MTGCardsmith would be fucking MSDOS. Trying to do anything beyond making the most basic card imaginable is a slugfest. Not only with the site's responsiveness being nonexistent, trying to make adjustments and modifications to the frame is so confusing. I most MTGCardBuilder. In my opinion it is the most in-depth editor there is, not to mention its fairly easy to get good with. I've been using CardBuilder for around a year, mainly for custom proxy creation, so you'd think using the new Cardsmith editor would be easy, right? Yes, and a big no.

This editor is a steaming pile of shit. Nothing is polished, it doesn't even looked finished. It looks like a test build, not a release version. Come with me to build card, why don't you?

Before then, lets to a quick comparison. The first image is CardBuilder, the second Cardsmith. Which one looks more intuitive. CardBuilder right? Right. See what I mean by how Cardsmith doesnt even look finished? But its whatever, if it makes a good card, who cares.

First lets add a frame. This is where I first get tripped up. On CardBuilder, the frames are right there to use. Nice and easy. Not on Cardsmith. On Cardsmith I have to go to Frames -> Frames -> Choose a Frame, and go through this god awful UI.

This front page of the frame selection is so weird. All the frames from the legacy editor are here. It's not that its bad, it just looks really unprofessional. For this demonstation I'm going to be making an Adventure card. Something that was impossible in the legacy editor. You go to the dropdown on the left, and click on Adventures.

Y’all I’m back but cardsmith isn’t working for me. I’m deleting my account and making a new one soon, but I’m fine. I’m basically just going to be making cards on the weekends occasionally, and also I have changed my policy on art. My new policy is:
- No AI art whatsoever.
- No Human art I have not gotten specific permission to use.
- Typically I will now be using a simple white rectangle with a light grey MTG logo, no art.

another thing, my new account will not be active on the Forums.

I will not be leaking the title of my new account, nor will I put anything in its description mentioning me. You may recognize who it is, you may not. I will also now be creating my own custom FULL SET. 300-400 cards and everything. I’m working on it right now.

1. The Forum is hard to find on the mtgcardsmith.com Homepage. It would be better if the link to the Forum would be easier to find and it could be a larger font size. I am quite sure that some people think the forum is entirely gone cause they cant find it anymore on the homepage.

2. When Logging in at mtgcardsmith.com and then going to the forum, logging in at the forum doesnt always work. For some weird reason it only works then after a browser restart. Dont know if this occurs with all browsers, but im having this problem with Firefox.This occurs since the forum update.

3. Sometimes the Forum is really slow and threads take really long to load or threads dont load at all. My internetconnection is DSL 100.000 so its probably not something connection-related.

I really like this forum and the people here and it would be a shame if the forum would slowly die because of some minor software things.

Lhunter posted this on Random Discussions two months ago. Nobody seems to have noticed, and I am very ashamed to say that includes myself up until recently. I have since sent him a message over the forums begging him not to kill himself, but I doubt he will see it, since he said he was going inactive. Depression, let alone suicide are to be taken VERY seriously, and not to be ignored.

Anyone who is able to contact him/people he knows in person, indirectly, or even obtaining the contact info of people in his life should do so IMMEDIATELY.

I repeat: it is of UPMOST IMPORTANCE that anyone able to contact his should, for Lhunter's life may be at stake.

Finally Wizards of the Coast has learned that Snails are a really important part of the Magic the Gathering Ecosystem and released another Snail! Or, more important, it is the first SNAIL ever, cause all the other snails they released where SLUGS and not SNAILS. This is the first Snail that has actually the creature type SNAIL and not SLUG. Does this mean that slugs and snails will go different ways now ? Will they be divided into the lame Slug type and the much cooler Snail tribe ?

Is this the beginning of a new Era where snails will rule supreme or is this just another lost snail whose fate it is to be utterly forgotten ? Does magic need more snails ? Whats your favorite snail ? Should there be snails at all in magic ?

New to cardsmith. needing help with custom icons

Hey guys, new to cardsmith and this forum... making my first card set. have designed my set icon but whenever i generate the card it only shows the cog symbol + i dont get to see how the icon looks like in the different rarities as i now have no idea if its compatible.

Hello everyone! This is something I wanted to do for a while but always forgot to do because my memory is more broken then shattered glass . So basically all of this discussion is about, is you (the customer) can just ask for a prompt of art, and I will either draw or search for hours for that prompt. Example: You ask for a giant dragon and you can either have it custom drawn or I can spend heaps of my time finding what you ask for. Now if I cant find it then I will get back to you with AI generated images or such. But this is just meant for help with finding art, and if you want who painted or illustrated it.

So welcome, and I am usually active on Mtg Cardsmith so I will get back to you in a day or two (maybe longer depending on how detailed or bizarre the prompt is). If I am not going to be on the site for an extended period of time then I will let you guys know .

Taking a Bit of a Hiatus

Hey, Keef here, you will know me from my cardsmith user, TheKeefMan. I've been an active cardsmith for the better part of 1 1/2 years. I'm on a bit of a creative low for the moment, and don't find my most recent cards to be very innovative. My card output will be on a very down-low for awhile. I don't know when I will be active in full capacity again, but when I do I hope to kick off my Solamen: Times Combined story again. Just wanted to let you all to those who enjoy my cards or my presence in general.
