August 5, 1993. Alpha cards were based on the premise that players were a planeswalker who summoned creatures and cast spells in a duel against another planeswalker. Flavor text described the character of many people and places of Dominaria and elsewhere, that were expanded in future expansions, most notably
Urza and Mishra.
