Both Dallben’s staff and the letter sticks were made
of ash. According to Celtic mythology, ash is a tree
of magical properties. Druidical wands were made of ash. In ancient Wales oars and coracle slats were also made of ash, as were rods for urging on horses. All knowledge was supposedly inscribed upon three ash rods by the prophet and bard, Einigan Gawr.
