Dias was funded by the wealthy Prince Henry the Navigator to claim land for his country. The Portuguese also had strong navy ships that could endure the long journey.

In 1488, Dias became the first European explorer to round the southern tip of Africa, opening a sea route to Asia. Unfortunately, his ship got caught in a storm after rounding the Cape of Good Hope and never reached land.
