Cave Bear
Double Strike
The scientific name spelaeus is used because fossils of this
species were mostly found in caves. This reflects the views of
experts that cave bears may have spent more time in caves than the
brown bear, who only uses them for hibernation. The cave bear
inhabited low mountainous areas, especially in regions with
limestone caves. They seem to have avoided open plains, preferring
forested or forest-edged terrains.
