Contrabassoon
The contrabassoon is a larger version of the
bassoon, sounding an octave lower.
The instrument is twice as long, curves around
on itself twice and is supported by an endpin
rather than a seat strap. The fingering of the
contrabassoon is slightly different than the
bassoon, particularly at the register change
and in the extreme high range, partially because
contrabassoons have a different harmonic series
to the bassoon.
