Cottonwoods

Populus balsamifera, angustifolia, & deltoides
Lewis found three species of cottonwood trees in Montana. They are sometimes difficult to distinguish from one another, due to their ability
to hybridize. Cottonwoods were used to make 12
of the 17 dugout canoes used by the expedition.
