The Dream Demon appears when an old emotional trigger activates within the Self, causing them to feel sleepy and unable to continue with their goals and dreams. The Dream Demon slowly absorbs the Self's motivation, whispering in their ear to fall asleep, so as to encourage the Self to fail in their endeavors through self-inflicted lethargy.
