Emily

Emily is a doll that symbolizes Sara's loneliness.
She is Sara's only companion and she is commonly
mentioned throughout the book. When Sara
gets taken in by Mr. Carrisford, Emily is no
longer brought up.
"Nothing but a doll-doll-doll! You care for
nothing. You are stuffed with sawdust. You
never had a heart. Nothing could ever
make you feel. You are a doll!" (149)
