By 1915 Germany formed a naval blockade, forcing Britain to switch
from imports to purely domestic agriculture as their only source of
food which increased the wages of farmers. Yet by 1916 Britain
introduced conscription which sent young men, including most
farmers, to the military. As a result, women and the elderly had to
not only pick up the slack at home but had to keep an entire nation
from starving.
