Ionization

Ionization refers to an atom or molecule
acquiring a negative or positive charge by gaining
or losing electrons. Ionization can also occur
through radioactive decay in which an excited
nucleus transfers its energy to one of the inner-
shell electrons, causing it to be ejected.
While electrons can enter an excited state by
occupying higher orbital shells, ionization is
the distinct separation of their charges.
