Jackson County

The county was named for Andrew Jackson,
President of the United States. Jackson County is
a prohibition or dry county, save for three cities
within the county that allow alcohol sales. It is
the site of Russell Cave National Monument, an
archeological site with evidence of 8,000 years of
human occupation in the Southeast. Unlike much
of Alabama, the hilly and mountainous terrain
of the Appalachians made the area unsuitable for
the plantation-style agriculture, relying primarily
