Collected information about the British and gave it to the Americans
Reported to famous General Marquis de Lafayette
He provided infor to the Americans that helped them defeat the British at the Battle of Yorktown
General Marquis de Lafayette helped him get his freedom, therefore James added Lafayette to the end of his name in honor of the General
