Lula Mae Ballard was born in LA, in Washington
Parish. At 20, she married a local man twice her
age, farmer Samuel J., and they started a family
together. 4 boys and 2 girls would be born to
them, the last when Lula was 40, in 1935. They
were married for 30 years when Jay passed away;
Lula lived another 25 years, dying in 1971, at 76.
