Merrimack

The Merrimack was the South's Ironclad during the
Civil War. An ironclad is a steam-propelled
warship protected by iron or steel armor plates.
The ironclad was developed as a result of the
vulnerability of wooden warships to explosive or
incendiary shells. The Merrimack fought in the
Battle of Hampton Roads where it faced the
North's Monitor, the battle was a draw.
