Allies would rotate troops in and out of the front lines, even allowing for occasional leaves back home, in an attempt to keep morale high. Organizations such as the YMCA setup stations behind friendly lines to provide a quiet space for soldiers in such a chaotic war. Soldiers could often be seen playing baseball, reading, or even playing card games such as bridge and poker in support trenches.
