Morgan County
Morgan County was created in 1818. The
county was originally named Cotaco for a creek
that flows through it but was changed in 1821 to
Morgan County in honor of Gen. Daniel Morgan
of Virginia, who fought in the American
Revolution. During the Civil War, Morgan
County was a hotly contested area because of its
access to a railroad bridge across the Tennessee
River. Modern day Morgan County hosts a
variety of festivals and celebrations related to
wildlife and nature conservancy.
