Oxidation of alcohol
Oxidation is a C atom forming more bonds to
O and less to H.
Takes place with an oxidizing agent, [O].
1. Primary alcohols produce an aldehyde and with
further oxidation produce a carboxylic acid.
2. Secondary alcohols produce a ketone and
cannot be oxidized further.
3. Tertiary alcohols cannot be oxidized since
all of C's 4 bonding sites are taken and there
is no H that can be removed. Also the C-C
are too strong to be broken by an [O].
