Pain and Pleasure

This book shows that you can't always value pleasure without having the pain as well. If you have a wonderful experience you can't exactly value it as much as you could after you've been through the pain. The pain highlights the pleasure because you look back onto how far you've come and then the good feeling you get from that adds on to make you feel even better. This shows as a good example when Jonas is given memories by The Giver and experiences pain while also love and comfort.
