Fossils of Palaeochiropteryx were first recovered from the Messel Pit, near the village of Messel, Germany in 1917. Messel pit was surrounded by a lush tropical jungle ecosystem teeming with wildlife. Among these were several bat species, including Palaeochiropteryx.
