"Pterodactyl" is the common term for the winged reptiles properly called pterosaurs. It's unclear at what point "Pterodactyl" became the pop-culture synonym for pterosaurs in general. paleontologists avoid using the term, and concentrate on individual genera, such as Pterodactylus and Pteranodon
