By 1915 German Air superiority was dominating the Western Front and
so Sir John French requested the design of a high caliber
anti-aircraft gun that infantry could use to support their pilots.
Although 18 pound AA guns existed prior to the QF 13, their slow
muzzle velocity made them easy for German Pilots to evade. The QF
13 set new bounds for the maximum height and speed an AA gun could
fire at.
