Although Britain started the war with 700 000 soldiers and 1
million freshly enlisted troops ready to fight in this “moral
crusade”, the war consumed the lives of more soldiers than Britain
could train. As a result, Britain instituted conscription in 1916,
conscripting 2.5 million men over the course of the war. This
