I rarely visited concentration camps because I felt I could maintain order by sitting at my office. I feared Himmler and did not enjoy holding a position of power. I did my best to avoid Himmler even when one of my duties was reporting the number of escapes from the camps to him. I found myself on edge when Himmler's fascination with Auschwitz grew.
