In a perfect example of bet hedging, each year, the
hermit lays several clutches of eggs spread over the
shores of different islands. Although it might
sometimes be more effective to lay all eggs on the same,
most suitable island, this behavior ensures that some
of the eggs survive in the case of a sudden disruption.
