Robert Smalls

Robert Smalls was born on April 5th, 1839, in Beaufort, South Carolina. He was a sailor on the "Planter". During the civil war, he had found info while captured on a Confederate ship that greatly helped the U.S. Navy.He had also been a U.S. Congressman after he was elected. Sadly, Robert Smalls died on February 23rd, 1915 in Beaufort, South Carolina. "My race needs no special defense, in this Country, proves them to be equal of anyone. All they need is an equal chance in the battle of life."
