Shrek, the Layered enters the battlefield with X
layer counters on it. When Shrek, the Layered
becomes the target of a spell or ability, remove a
layer counter from it and it gains hexproof until
the beginning of the next end step. Then if Shrek,
the Layered has no layer counters on it, you lose
the game.
Ogres are like onions: they have layers.
