St. Simeon Stylites

St. Simeon Stylites practiced a very specific kind
of Askesis, or asceticism, in which he would sit
on a pillar until he died! The Stylites and other
Acsetics teach us how people, after the
legalization of Christianity in 313 AD with the
Edict of Milan, would emulate the martyrs and
others who would suffer for Jesus!
Patient on this tall pillar I have borne. Rain, wind,
frost, heat, hail, damp, and sleet, and snow

-Alfred Tennyson, St. Simeon Stylites (poem)
