The Athenian Navy
The Athenian Navy consisted of 80,000 men
manning 400 boats. It was a fearsome force to be reckoned with, as
it beat the even larger Persian
Navy at the Battle of Salamis. The foundation of the navy was the
rowers, pulled from the lower reaches
of Athenian society, giving them an edge in training over less
adept navies.
