The Original Jim Crow

Jim Crow was originally a character played by an actor wearing ‘blackface’ makeup. That means that a white person would put black on their face to look African American. He dressed like this to mock black people.
Black codes began to be described as Jim Crow because it was an unflattering way to show black people.
