The Running Contest

- King Icarius held a running race in Sparta,
where the victor would receive Penelope as a wife
and fortune.
-> This was a custom tradition: a competition was
hosted to determine the husband of a noble-born
woman.
- Odysseus won the contest and married Penelope,
thus beginning their relationship with each other.
"The man who won the contest got the woman and the wedding. He obtained wealth through the marriage."
