The Stamp Act

The Stamp Act was passed in 1765 by Parliament and it placed a tax on almost all printed material, including newspapers, wills, and playing cards. All printed material had to have a stamp which was applied by British officials after the tax was paid. This led to a boycott of British goods. British merchants lost so much business that they begged Parliament to repeal the Stamp Act.
