Whenever you or a creature you control would take damage, you may prevent it and put X mortality counters on Undying Pyre, where X is the damage prevented this way.
When Undying Pyre leaves the battlefield, it deals damage to you equal to the number of mortality counters on it. This damage can't be prevented.
