Theme

The theme is friendship, but more specifically the ways in which true friendship often involves self-sacrifice. Fern shows this when she stops her father from killing Wilbur by saying "The pig couldn't help being born small, could it? If I had been very small at birth, would you have killed me?" She is sacrificing being in trouble with her father to save Wilbur from getting killed.
