The thirteenth amendment was passed. It meant that all slavery was illegal in the states. This would should help unify them and make all states equal.
Congress passed the Freedmen’s Bureau to help freed people who were poor by feeding them and educating them. This would help them rebuild the country to make all people equal. This was very successful and helped thousands of people in the south.
