She did not miss her at all, in fact, and as she was a self-absorbed child she gave her entire thought to herself, as she had always done.
This part of the story was more about Mary's attitude rather than the parent's deaths. In this quote the her refers to Mary's mother and explains that Mary did not miss her in the slightest. This occurs in the Exposition and shows how Mary is egotistical, ill-mannered, and corrupted. Mary's character development sta
